Damn, RJ!
I have just become convinced by the youngsters on RPGnet that Hard SF has changed definition since I was a lad. Heinlein, Azimov, Niven, and others are now considered Space Opera. The definition of Hard SF that you present is the one I have always used, and was what I designed my SF game around, but apparently only old farts like me use this definition any more. Now Hard SF is much more restrictive. No "gizmos", no aliens, no FTL, no big advances in tech - everything must be a straight projection of existing technology. Transhuman Space is the only game you mentioned which apparently qualifies. Be prepared for a hammering! I certainly got one!
And I had just made peace with our SF game being referred to as a "Space Opera" too! Well, no. A little voice in the back of my head keeps shrieking "They are wrong, damn it!" Now that little voice is doing a dance and chanting "I *told* you so!" I'm off to smother it under a pillow.
