I think it all depends on the extent to which you rip off, I mean pay homage to, the source material.

I'm running a fantasy game where the bad guy has 'Taken' ala Cook's 'The Black Company' (which I would argue is probably a riff on the Nazgul). They've got different individual names, but having them has managed to put the fear of god into the players in the know (somthing that can be hard to do in a fantasy setting).

On the other hand, I once played in a near future special ops game that I thought was incredibly cool until I read 'Voice of the Whirlwind' by Walter Jon Williams and realised that the whole thing had been taken without alteration.
