I think this otherwise well done column does not adequately touch on the subject of historical and literary themed games, which thrive on healthy amounts of kidnapping. Both time travel and alternate historical games demand the use of easily identifiable characters. Ars Magica sagas and World War Two games with famous personalities or before-they-were-stars celebrities will be strengthened as well.
Even characters with lots of baggage can nonetheless throw your characters for a loop. A good example would be Parke Godwin's _The Tower of Beowulf_, in which the titular hero has a wicked death wish.
Plenty of other characters could be nudged a bit and come out looking totally new - Sherlock Holmes as a raging coke addict comes to mind immediately.
