 Isn't this a bit pessimistic?

Well, come on! We've got Transhuman Space and Star Trek both due to be released soon which will probably get most critics enthusing about them uncontrollably.......Fourth Millenium may also make it this year as well.....a Farscape and a Red Dwarf RPG too has been mentioned. We may also get a few more, y'never know....

Not only that but Fading Suns has just gone d20 and Traveller is about to, whilst the originals remain in print and well-supported (along with the GURPS version of Traveller). Dream Pod 9's Jovian Chronicles and Heavy Gear, and various Tri-stat titles cater for Anime sci-fi well enough. Blue Planet also has more source material released than the average gamer will ever bother to read, Star Wars can be found in pretty much any gaming shop, and Conspiracy X is still about too.

Also, whilst Fantasy may have had the limelight over the last year in the movies, historically it has always been the cinematic poor cousin of Sci-fi uptil only very recently. Think:

2001, Star Wars, Star Trek, Blade Runner, Jurrassic Park, Twelve Monkeys, A.I., Starship Troopers, Final Fantasy: The Spirit Within, Metropolis, Solaris (Famous Russian movie), A Clockwork Orange, Akira, Independance Day, The Planet of the Apes, Robocop, The Terminator, Alien, E.T., Brazil, The Thing, The X files, The Matrix, Cube, Total Recall and so on, and so on, and so on.....
