It's true that there has been very little by way of hard sci-fi this year, but (to my mind) that's because some part of the audience has been usurped by the scrappy, bizarre aesthetic of steampunk instead. GURPS Steampunk was released this year, and the Tribe 8 line continues to prosper. Post-modern sensibilities feel themselves more inclined to biomechanical monstrosities and Victoriana than to rayguns and faster-than-light travel. Roleplaying has its trends, you know. Just an idea.
