You could try and stop using a rules system altogether.
Here in Finland a lot of progressive traditional roleplayers have done that. I personally fidgeted for a long time, but I haven't looked back since I finally made the transition and ditched the rules.
Sure, rules are fun in a dungeon crawl game, but in a roleplaying game that consists of actual roleplaying they have proved to be useless. Often harmful.
Some GMs here use the d10 rules system, where the GM rolls a d10 when in doubt about an outcome. He then makes a considered judgement based on various factors relevant to the issue. No rules in the rulebook sense are involved. When I GM, I just make it up as I go.
I've felt that after playing rule-less for a time, playing in a game that uses rules starts to feel clunky. The idea that some sort of a mechanic intrudes on the game disrupts the mood. The idea that I'd have to make an effort to learn and understand a possibly complicated rules system seems downright bizarre.
