For what it's worth, the group I play with have been using the WoD "learning" XP point to do precisely what you speculate about: if the character figures out something about himself, or about his preconceptions and assumptions about the world, or discovers a new way of approaching certain situations, it's worth an XP, sometimes contingent on this newfound insight coming into play in later sessions. For example, we've had a paranoid lone-wolf Euthanatos assassin discovering the advantages of working in a group, then trying to figure out how to actually do that, a Native American character who left his tribe's reservation without a second thought begin to have qualms about those that were left behind, and a Buddhist monk become disillusioned with pacifism. Seems to work out pretty well -- RP bonuses are generally reserved for good in-character dialogue and exchanges, while the Learning XP takes care of the larger character arc.
