 Madness mechanics? Don't need 'em.

Never have, never will. To me, they're just a holdover from the bad old days when players and GMs were assumed to be in direct mortal competition (ala Hackmaster). The whole idea being that mental instability is a weakness that hinders a character's (and therefore player's) ability to beat the GM and win the game, therefore no smart player would ever willingly portray it and the GM needed a big, bad rules cudgel to force it on those stubborn S.O.Bs.

Blah. If that's your problem, just play D&D. It's clearly what you really want anyway.

I tend to have good players. Damn good players, actually. They know horror and they love horror. They actively enjoy and, in fact, insist upon playing their character in a genre-approiate fashion. When the crazy shit hits the fans in our sessions, the characters that are going to faint faint, the characters that are going to flip out flip out and the characters that are going to wet themselves and run away wet themselves and run away. All of their own volition and with no prodding required. There's no need for me to pull the "old roll dice to see if you're scared" buzzkill. They'll tell ME if they're scared, why and how they react. And they'll take care to do a damn good job of it. Why wouldn't they? They came to a horror game to play horror characters, not displaced superheroes.

I wouldn't have it any other way.
