This Month in Roleplaying #2: February, 2008.

New Releases

February saw the release of some particularly exciting titles. Trail of Cthulhu made its debut, offering mystery fans a new way to approach their investigations into the Mythos thanks to the Gumshoe system. Sons of Liberty provides some high action and adventure roleplaying during the Revolutionary War.

The big names gave us City of Stormreach and Midnight Roads, a pair of setting books further developing Eberron and the World of Darkness, respectively. Speaking of D&D, don’t let it be said that new content doesn’t continue to march out for 3.5 edition. Monte Cook’s latest release, The Book of Experimental Might, hit virtual shelves this month and provides as many mechanical toys as one would expect from reknowned Monte Cook.

On The Forums

ENWorld provides my favorite discussion of 4E yet: an actual play review. StoryGames asks Why Publish? and provides a few interesting answers. Meanwhile, RPGnet speculates on the relationship between science and magic.

My Take

I issued six reviews this month, covering a wide variety of games. I kicked the month off with a review of the cleverly diceless Active Exploits and followed up with the medieval horror of Conspiracy of Shadows and its Companion. Defcon 1 offers a Cold War era adventure in the elegant Mutants and Masterminds 2nd while Alpha Omega: The Beginning and the End dazzles with its futuristic post-apocalyptic setting.

Finally, for those with an interest in all things Epic I added reviews of Scion: Demigod and Scion: God to the database. This three book series has been a fascinating read, combining both a continuing epic adventure and elements of core books / supplements into every addition to the line.

On The Horizon

Things are looking up since Fantasy Flight Games announced the acquisition of Games Workshop IP, including Warhammer Fantasy and the new Warhammer 40K RPG line. Being hit with the announcement that EOS Press is publishing a new edition (or at least a rerelease plus) of Nobilis gives us even more to look forward to.

Other than that it’s Dreams of the First Age in April and D&D 4E in June! Be sure to stop by RPGnet’s Actual Play Review Week in March to check out some fantastic reviews!

Until next month, happy gaming!
